What Is A Nurse Practitioner?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who has a higher level of nursing education and training. NPs assess patient needs, order and interpret labs and imaging, diagnose illness, prescribe medications, and formulate treatment plans. NPs undergo national certification and require periodic continuing education credits in order to be recognized as health care experts. NPs are not only health care providers, they are mentors, researchers, administrators, educators, and policy makers.  NPs lower healthcare costs and help to improve access to care, especially in areas with a shortage of primary care providers.
